Richard W. Heine, age 91, Thursday, October 11, 2007, at The Village at Westerville Retirement Center.
Veteran U.S. Navy, WWII. Retired Auditor, State of Ohio.
World renowned composer and arranger for The Ohio State University Marching Band and The Ohio State University Alumni Band. Universally recognized and responsible for the unique sound of the OSU Band and for his arrangements of the chimes and Carmen Ohio. Received the Script Ohio Award and was one of the few non-sousaphone members ever to "dot the I" in Script Ohio.
Member, Class of 2007 of the Sphinx, Senior Honorary Fraternity at OSU.
Preceded in death by first wife Harriet V. Heine. Survived by wife, Katharine S. Heine; sons, Bruce (Lynn) of Upper Arlington and Philip (Yvonne) Heine of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Benjamin (Yueli) Heine, Hayward, CA, Jeannine (Walter) Sykes, Seattle, WA, Jennie (Brian) Beifuss, Columbus, OH and Douglas Heine, San Diego, CA; step-children, Larry (Kathy) Koehl of Pickerington, OH, Kenneth (Brenda) Koehl, Greenville, NC and Dave McDauel, Sioux Falls, SD; three step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
Friends may call at the Southwick-Good & Fortkamp Funeral Chapel, 3100 N. High St., Thursday, October 18, 2007, from 10 - 11:45 am followed by a Memorial Service at 12 Noon. Private inurnment Union Cemetery. Celebration of Life Service Sunday, November 4, 2007, 1:30 pm at Weigel Hall, behind Mershon Auditorium on OSU Campus. Richard was a member of the marching band from 1935 through 1939, playing clarinet and tenor horn. He served as the band's head arranger from 1935 through 1985 and continued to provide arrangements to both the marching and alumni bands until his death in 2007.
