Harold Samuel McGinnis, Sr

Hal "Mac" McGinnis, Sr., 94, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Western Reserve Masonic Community in Medina.
Born in Barberton, Ohio on July 9, 1915, he graduated from Wadsworth High School and attended Ohio State University where he was a member of the Concert and Marching Bands. Mac received a Chemistry degree from Oberlin College in 1942. Enlisting in the US Navy after Pearl Harbor as a yeoman and pharmacist mate, he was stationed in Auckland New Zealand where he met and married his wife of 59 years, Lindesay (nee Perry). Proficient at piano, alto sax and clarinet, he led a small USO band. As a Naval Officer, he later enrolled in the US Navy Oriental Language School to learn Japanese.
Attending night school while employed by PPG, Mac earned the degree of Juris Doctor from University of Akron in 1955. Later, as an employee of Goodyear, he lived with his family on the Wingfoot Rubber Plantation in Sumatra, Indonesia, eventually returning to PPG residing in Havana, Cuba; San Juan, Puerto Rico and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively doing consulting work in Australia, Italy and Brazil. Mac was proficient in many languages through his work and travels. His leisure retirement years were spent with family in Annandale, Virginia and Cocoa, Florida where he professionally played his beloved clarinet.
Mac was a 58 year member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio.
He is survived by his four children, Harold (Tanya) McGinnis Jr. Jacqueline (Bijan) Melany: William (Mary Jane) McGinnis and Jennifer Tifft (fiancée Ben Smegelsky) , nine grandchildren, Stephanie (James)Thomas; Jonathan (Ann) McGinnis; David (Terri) Richards, Christopher (Christine) Richards, Heather (Keith) Jenkins, Staicey (Brad) Scholtz, Angela (Niki) Relosa, Danielle (Chris) Bryan and Jeffrey Tifft 15 great-grandchildren, Lauren and Michael Thomas, Timothy, Andrew and Natalie McGinnis, Lucas and Gabriel Richards, Tyler and Bailey Richards, Shawn and Carleigh Doyle, Niki, Jaxon and Kaia Relosa, and Collin Bryan, and two brothers, Dr. Donald E. (Ruth) McGinnis and Richard E. (Mary) McGinnis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Ruth McGinnis, twin sister Helen in 1915 and wife Lindesay in 2003.
Family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon on Saturday May 8th at Western Reserve Masonic Community Chapel, 4931 Nettleton Road, Medina. Masonic Service will be held at Noon with a memorial service to follow at 12:15 pm.

Hal was a member of the marching band in 1937 and 1938. He played Bb tuba.
