Sylvia Ruth Rickett

June 11, 1957 - October 20, 2024

Sylvia was born on June 11, 1957, to Ralph V. Rickett, formerly of Ashland, Ohio, and Ruth L. Rickett (Heller), formerly of Bellville, Ohio. Sylvia lived in Columbus, Ohio, during her early childhood and then resided in Dublin, Ohio, for the entirety of her school years. Sylvia loved playing tetherball at school at Indian Run Elementary and was quite good, usually beating everyone. She also was very active in band - concert, marching, and pep bands, excelling at playing the trombone. She was also on the track team. Sylvia graduated from Dublin High School in 1975.

After graduating from high school, Sylvia attended The Ohio State University and became a member of “The Best Damn Band in the Land” The Ohio State University Marching Band, from 1975 through 1978, continuing playing the trombone/trombonium. She was also active in track and discus throwing at Ohio State. In more recent years, she was an active member of The Ohio State University Alumni Marching Band, performing concerts all over the State of Ohio. She also performed in TubaChristmas at various times.

After attending Ohio State, she attended Columbus Technical Institute (CTI), later renamed Columbus State Community College, and received a degree in aviation mechanics. She then moved to California pursuing a career working on and teaching classes about jet engines. Also while in California, she worked at the Disneyland Clothing Department and was in charge of costumes. In 2008, she returned to Ohio to take care of her mother who lived in Cardington. Sylvia resided in Cardington until her death at age 67.

Sylvia was a very unique and talented person who enjoyed wood carving, music, politics (a staunch conservative Republican), and sports. Sylvia also played the piano. Her mother, Ruth, taught piano at their residence in Dublin, Ohio, for many years. Sylvia was an amateur radio operator (N8AKI) and also had her pilot’s license.

Sylvia is survived by cousins Janet Hamermiller, Leanne Haag, Louise Goldsmith, Laura Moser, Lynnette Davis, Rick Haag, Mark Strine, Paul Strine, and Clinton Rickett. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph in 1992 and Ruth in 2023. She was also preceded in death by her uncle, G. Franklin Rickett in 2024, with whom she was very close. Sylvia also had a few very close friends, including Barb Mulford (Sherman), Martha Hayden (Carpenter), and Cathy Honaker.

A memorial service is to be held on November 16, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at Cardington Community Methodist Church, 300 South Marion Street, Cardington, Ohio 43315. Pastor John Carpenter will be presiding. Interment will be at Nova Cemetery in Nova, Ohio, where her parents are also buried.

Sylvia was a member of the marching band from 1974 through 1978. She played Trombonium and Trombone.
